Tour Overview
INTRODUCTION
Begin your cycling adventure in the ancient capital of Nara and journey into the timeless spirit of Japan. Your destination is the Kumano region on the Kii Peninsula, a land that has been revered for centuries as one of Japan’s most sacred places. Follow the World Heritage Kumano Kodo pilgrimage route and discover a unique spiritual culture that has flourished for more than a thousand years.
For centuries, emperors, nobles, and pilgrims traveled to Kumano to pray and seek spiritual renewal. During this journey, you will visit the three sacred shrines of Kumano Sanzan: Kumano Hongu Taisha, Kumano Hayatama Taisha, and Kumano Nachi Taisha, each rich in history and tradition.
Along the way, you will visit Dorogawa Onsen, a charming mountain hot spring village and an important center of Shugendo, Japan’s ancient mountain ascetic tradition. Surrounded by pristine forests, it offers a peaceful atmosphere and a glimpse into Japan’s spiritual heritage.
Cycling through the Kii Peninsula, you will ride beneath ancient forests and through spectacular landscapes while connecting with the history, culture, and natural beauty of this remarkable region.
As your journey ends on the shores of the Pacific Ocean, you will leave with unforgettable memories and a deeper appreciation of Japan’s timeless traditions.

Accommodadtions
We place great importance on supporting local tourism and economies by selecting traditional Japanese accommodations, such as ryokans and minshuku (family-run guesthouses). These lodgings often feature on-site hot springs (onsen) and offer an authentic Japanese hospitality experience, including sleeping on futons laid out on tatami mats.
Particularly on our Kumano Kodo tours, most accommodations are small, family-run establishments due to the nature of the region, and large hotels are limited. As a result, there may be cases where the group is split across different lodgings. However, this provides a wonderful opportunity for closer interaction with local people and meaningful cultural exchange. We encourage you to embrace and enjoy the warm hospitality these accommodations offer.
There are a few important considerations to keep in mind before your stay.

Room in Ryokan
Traditional Japanese rooms do not have beds; instead, they feature a futon mat laid out on a tatami straw-woven floor for sleeping. The photo shows what a typical ryokan room looks like. In some ryokans, particularly those in remote areas, toilets may not be available in each room. Instead, there are shared public toilets on the premises.

Yukata
Most accommodations provide a "Yukata," a traditional night robe, which you can wear to the hot spring and on-site restaurants. If you enjoy wearing a yukata, you may not need to bring as much nightwear.

Onsen hot spring
Many ryokans offer a pleasant public Onsen (hot spring) for communal use, and as such, some rooms may not have their own shower and bath.

Washing area
The public onsen includes a washing area where you can clean yourself.
