Tour Overview
INTRODUCTION
Embark on a captivating cycling journey from the tranquil shores of Lake Biwa and step into the timeless mysteries of Japan. Your destination is the Kumano region on the Kii Peninsula, a land revered since ancient times as a gateway to the realm of the dead. Follow the sacred Kumano Kodo pilgrimage route and immerse yourself in Japan's unique spiritual culture, which has flourished for over a thousand years. Kumano, once believed to possess the power to revive the dead, has long been a sacred place visited by emperors and nobility. This journey includes a visit to the three grand shrines of Kumano Sanzan—Kumano Hongu Taisha, Kumano Hayatama Taisha, and Kumano Nachi Taisha—where you can experience the echoes of ancient prayers that still resonate in each shrine. This pilgrimage also takes you to Mount Koya, where you’ll stay in traditional temple lodging, allowing you to experience the quiet daily life of monks and find moments of peace away from the bustle of modern life. As you cycle through the Kii Peninsula, you’ll pass through ancient forests and landscapes that evoke the legendary “Yomi no Kuni,” Japan’s mythical land of the dead, connecting deeply with the cultural and spiritual roots of this extraordinary region. The Kumano Kodo, with its rich natural beauty and profound history, is a place where the boundaries between life and the afterlife seem to blur. At the journey’s end, you will find yourself at the vast shores of the Pacific Ocean, with renewed energy and memories that will remain with you long after the journey concludes.

Accommodadtions
We place great importance on supporting local tourism and economies by selecting traditional Japanese accommodations, such as ryokans and minshuku (family-run guesthouses). These lodgings often feature on-site hot springs (onsen) and offer an authentic Japanese hospitality experience, including sleeping on futons laid out on tatami mats.
Particularly on our Kumano Kodo tours, most accommodations are small, family-run establishments due to the nature of the region, and large hotels are limited. As a result, there may be cases where the group is split across different lodgings. However, this provides a wonderful opportunity for closer interaction with local people and meaningful cultural exchange. We encourage you to embrace and enjoy the warm hospitality these accommodations offer.
There are a few important considerations to keep in mind before your stay.

Room in Ryokan
Traditional Japanese rooms do not have beds; instead, they feature a futon mat laid out on a tatami straw-woven floor for sleeping. The photo shows what a typical ryokan room looks like. In some ryokans, particularly those in remote areas, toilets may not be available in each room. Instead, there are shared public toilets on the premises.

Yukata
Most accommodations provide a "Yukata," a traditional night robe, which you can wear to the hot spring and on-site restaurants. If you enjoy wearing a yukata, you may not need to bring as much nightwear.

Onsen hot spring
Many ryokans offer a pleasant public Onsen (hot spring) for communal use, and as such, some rooms may not have their own shower and bath.

Washing area
The public onsen includes a washing area where you can clean yourself.
