This was a totally "custom" trip for our group, and Saori did a great job, being patient with all the different questions from the members of our group. One of my friends went back after Kibune, because he was not in good shape, plus the weather was VERY hot and VERY humid, and that affected us all greatly, but that could not be helped!

To kickstart your journey, head to the local bike shop to pick up your bikes and explore Kyoto town, ensuring that you are fully prepared for tomorrow's cycling expedition.

Once you have your wheels, it's time to immerse yourself in the captivating wonders of Kyoto. Known for its rich history and cultural heritage, this enchanting city offers a plethora of attractions waiting to be discovered.

Let’s begin our cycling journey today from the historic city of Kyoto, heading deep into the mountains toward Miyama. Leaving the lively streets of the city behind, we soon find ourselves on quieter country roads, where the scenery shifts from urban landscapes to riverside paths and lush greenery.

As we ride along the clear waters of the Yura River, the refreshing breeze and the gentle sound of flowing water accompany us. This route is a true delight for cyclists, offering moments of tranquility as we soak in the natural beauty surrounding us.

Continuing on, we pass through the quiet mountain roads of Keihoku, a region known for its unspoiled countryside charm. Here, the rolling hills and peaceful farmland provide a glimpse into rural life in Kyoto’s northern mountains.

Our final destination is Miyama, a picturesque village famous for its thatched-roof houses and timeless atmosphere. After our ride, we’ll have time to stroll through the village, enjoy the serene setting, and perhaps savor a meal made with fresh local ingredients.

Today’s route beautifully combines the energy of Kyoto City, the calm of Keihoku’s mountains, and the rustic charm of Miyama, making for an unforgettable cycling adventure.

We begin today’s ride in the charming village of Miyama, where the thatched-roof houses and peaceful countryside set the tone for a memorable journey. As we leave the village behind, the road leads us along quiet riversides and through serene farmland, gradually guiding us into the mountains.

Our route takes us toward Ashiu, a region known for its untouched forests and pristine natural beauty. Riding through this area, we are surrounded by towering trees, the sound of birdsong, and the refreshing mountain air—a true retreat into nature.

From Ashiu, we continue our ascent over the mountain pass. The climb is steady, but the reward is the tranquility of the highlands and sweeping views that unfold as we reach the top. This is a place to slow down, breathe deeply, and feel immersed in Kyoto’s northern wilderness.

Finally, we make our way down toward Hanase, a small mountain village nestled in the Kitayama region. Here, the rustic atmosphere and quiet surroundings offer a warm welcome. After a day of riding through rivers, forests, and mountain roads, Hanase provides the perfect setting to rest, reflect, and enjoy the calm of the countryside.

Today, we begin our cycling journey in the quiet mountain village of Hanase. Surrounded by lush forests and fresh mountain air, it’s the perfect place to start the day. As we set off, the winding mountain road gradually leads us downhill, rewarding us with sweeping views of the valleys below.

On our way, we pass by Kurama, a village steeped in history and spiritual charm. Here, the famous Kurama Shrine awaits, offering a glimpse into Japan’s cultural heritage nestled within the forested mountains.

From Kurama, the route takes us to Kifune, a beloved summer retreat known for its cool, clear river. The flowing water creates a refreshing atmosphere, and the riverside “Kawadoko” dining—where seats are arranged above the water—remains a unique tradition that draws visitors seeking a moment of serenity.

After enjoying the peaceful ambiance of Kifune, we continue our ride along the riverside path, feeling the cool breeze as we approach Kyoto. The contrast is striking as the tranquil countryside gradually gives way to the lively streets of the ancient capital.

Our journey ends in Kyoto City, where vibrant history and modern life coexist. With memories of mountain vistas, riverside roads, and quiet villages still fresh in our minds, we conclude this cycling adventure feeling both refreshed and inspired.

Accommodations

We choose Ryokan (traditional Japanese inn) as much as possible to support local tourism and economy.

Ryokan is traditional Japanese style inns often run by family and in many cases it has Onsen (natural hot springs) on site. It’s definitely the best choice if you want to experience authentic Japanese accommodation.

However, there are a few things to remember before staying there.

Traditional Japanese room does not have bed, instead, it has Futon mat on "Tatami" straw weaving floor to sleep on. The photo is how typical Ryokan room looks like.
Most of the accommodation provide "Yukata" traditional night robe, you can wear it to hot spring and restaurants on site. You don't have to carry your night clothing as much if you enjoy Yukata.
Most of Ryokan provide nice public Onsen hot spring to share, then some of the rooms do not have their own shower and bath. Public onsen has washing place where you can wash yourself.
Some of Ryokans in remote area do not have toilet in each room. They have public
